Before founding Ashesi, Patrick worked as a Program Manager for Microsoft Corporation. He holds bachelor degrees in Engineering and Economics from Swarthmore College, and an MBA from UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business. In 2004, Swarthmore awarded Patrick an honorary doctorate in recognition of his leadership in African higher education. Patrick Awuah was nominated a Global Leader 2007 by the World Economic Forum; and in recognition of his service to Ghana, was awarded Membership of the Order of the Volta by His Excellency, President J. A. Kufuor. He is a fellow of the Africa Leadership Initiative (a branch of The Aspen Global Leadership Network), a member of the United States Council on Foreign Relations, the Pacific Council on International Policy, and the Tau Beta Pi honor society for excellence in engineering. When she joined Ashesi in 2008, Joanna brought 14 years of non-profit fundraising and administration experience as Development Director and Trustee of Seattle Midwifery School and Assistant Regional Director of Women in Community Service. She earned a BA in Liberal Arts from St. John’s College and an MPA from UW’s Evans School of Public Affairs. Joanna first traveled to Africa as a Peace Corps volunteer teaching math in The Gambia. Mary joined Ashesi with seven years of fundraising experience at the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle, the Foundation Center, and Horn of Africa Services. Raised as a US citizen in Côte d’Ivoire, Mary earned her BA in International Relations and French at Seattle Pacific University. Amy is a recent graduate of University of Washington with degrees in Economics and International Studies. She has interned for the U.S. Department of State, consulted an NGO that builds schools in Africa, and conducted research on the role of education in eradicating extreme poverty. Natalie earned her BA from the University of Washington’s Jackson School of International Studies with a focus in International Development. She has worked with multiple Seattle-based non-profits and social enterprises in Monitoring & Evaluation, marketing, and CRM management, including two months as an intern in Peru for an NGO that empowers rural Andean women through knitting and weaving cooperatives. As a proponent of sound development practices, Natalie was drawn to Ashesi because of the home-grown, anti-brain-drain approach to creating a better future for Africa.

Our mission is to educate a new generation of ethical and entrepreneurial leaders in Africa; to cultivate within our students the critical thinking skills, the concern for others and the courage it will take to transform their continent.

Suzanne serves as Ashesi’s third Provost, and is also an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Ashesi. Suzanne has several years of industry experience and over 15 years of experience in Academia, primarily at Southwestern University (USA), and two years at Ashesi from 2006-2008 as a Fulbright Scholar. She holds a B.A. Summa Cum Laude in Mathematical Sciences (with Honors) from Connecticut College (USA), an M.A. in Mathematics from The University of Texas at Austin (USA), and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Sciences also from UT Austin. Suzanne rejoined the Ashesi Team in 2014.

 

Ruth Kwakwa
Dean of Student and Community Affairs

Ruth Kwakwa comes to the team with years of diverse experiences in the NGO, private enterprise, and education sectors. A graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Swarthmore College, Ruth worked with the World Bank and the Swedish Development Agency as a Consultant, at Lintas Ghana Limited as Director of Media Strategy and at Redhill School, South Africa as the Manager for Marketing, Brand Management and Alumni Relations. Ruth has a passion for working with young adults through mentoring, intercultural exchanges and leadership programs.

Araba served as Program Officer for the Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program (IFP) in West Africa for 12 years. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in French with Spanish from the University of Ghana, a post graduate diploma in Marketing of Services from the Maastricht School of Management (Netherlands), an Executive MBA from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, a certificate in Management of Higher Education Institutions from Galilee College (Israel), and a certificate in Project Management from Syncom Business Intelligence (South Africa).

 

Michael Kwatia

Michael has over 20 years of international experience in business, consultancy and academia. Prior to joining Ashesi, Michael was Senior Solutions Consultant at the Cambodian based Neeka and ThakralOne subsidiaries of the $2 billion Thakral Group of Companies of Singapore. He holds a B.Tech degree in Business and Finance from Barnsley College of Technology (UK) and an MBA in Information Systems Management from Trinity University and College (UK).

Prior to joining Ashesi, Fred was Vice President of New Product Development at Joerns Healthcare in Arlington, Texas. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Manufacturing Engineering from Central State University, a Master of Science in Engineering Science and Mechanics from Virginia Tech and a Doctorate in Materials Engineering from the University of Dayton. He also holds a Masters of Business Administration Degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Fred has held various roles in Engineering, Strategy, Marketing and Research, and has worked with several institutions in the U.S, including Princeton University, Siemens Healthcare and Becton Dickinson and Co. In 2008, Fred was awarded the Black Engineer of the Year’s Most Promising Scientist, and has over forty patents and patent applications in his name. He has also authored eight books, including three novels, and developed a passion for writing whilst a student at Nandom Secondary School, in the Upper West Region of Ghana.

Research Interests: Product Design/Development, Digital Manufacturing, Advanced Materials Systems, Renewable Energy and Sustainable Systems Design.
