Award-winning Ghanaian artist Livingstone Etse Satekla, popularly known as Stonebwoy, visited Ashesi to speak on “Using the creative arts as a tool for social change”. The visit formed the maiden leg of Stonebwoy’s year-long college-tour, which will see him speaking at several tertiary institutions across the country.
Speaking on social impact, the Afro-beat singer shared stories of how his upbringing impacted his choice of career and his musical journey thus far. “Making it a point to connect to my beginnings keeps me grounded,” he said. “It is easy to get caught up in the limelight when you’re in the industry. However, looking back helps me stay in touch with communities, friends and family that need some form of support.”
Drawing on his career, he engaged the audience on ways he combines music and creating social impact. “It’s all about finding yourself; we need to never stop learning, whether formally or informally,” he shared. “While people may discover what they are meant to do at a later stage, it is important to find oneself, and keep re-defining oneself. By finding yourself, you can create the most impact.”
For Stonebwoy, inspiring others to create impact is key to social change. “We may not be able to solve all the world’s problems even if we tried hard,” he said. “But through spreading our wings, we can impact a few people, and also inspire them to impact others. Everyone needs to do something small, and that’s what I focus on in my music.”
