Ashesi Foundation partners with GlobalGiving, a global online giving platform, to raise funds for Ashesi University. In June, GlobalGiving’s Field Traveler in Ghana, Alix Halloran, had the opportunity to visit Ashesi during graduation. Here, Alix shares what sets Ashesi apart.
By Alix Halloran – GlobalGiving Field Traveler
My name is Alix Halloran and I am GlobalGiving’s Field Traveler in West Africa. I’ve spent the past five months visiting GlobalGiving’s partners around West Africa. I was very excited to have the opportunity to celebrate graduation at Ashesi University.
Graduation was the perfect time to visit Ashesi because I got to see the results of all of the students, professors, and staff’s hard work. Hearing the students speak about their experience at Ashesi made it clear that Ashesi is truly changing lives in Ghana. I was amazed that around half of all of the students at Ashesi receive financial aid!
Ashesi knows that it is educating Ghana’s future leaders. As a result, the professors and staff put an emphasis on teaching the students about leadership and responsibility. They show students that you can do good for your community and still do well for yourself at the same time. Four years of leadership courses culminate in a community service project in the final year. Some students even transform this project into their career, creating their own social enterprise businesses.
I truly appreciate all of Ashesi‘s donors for giving to such an incredible organization. I am confident that Ashesi‘s impact on young leaders in Ghana will only continue to grow.
