Priscilla Owusuah-Bempah ’16

Meet Priscilla Owusuah-Bempah ’16, an Ashesi junior studying abroad at Macalester College in Minnesota.

PriscillaWhat inspired you to apply to Ashesi?
Well, I never had the dream of attending Ashesi but my dad wanted me to because of the good the good things he had heard about the school and the students and truly I have not regretted being an Ashesi student because of the transformation I have gotten.

What is the greatest thing you have learned at Ashesi?
I would say generosity and the ability to think and learn something new.

Have you been involved in any activities or clubs on campus?
I used to be part of the rotary club and then to the arts factory of which I am still a member and an executive. I also volunteer in some activities that are organized by the school and students like the spelling bee program. A colleague and I also helped to provide a generator for the clinic in Berekuso.

In your opinion, what is the most important work that Ashesi does?
I believe the most important work Ashesi does is to provide enough opportunities for students to explore different fields in the academic arena so they can make impact in their various societies or communities.

How do you describe Ashesi to others?
Ashesi is just an amazing place to be and learn great things.

What do you hope to do in the future?
I want to be a database administrator and then I want to have an IT school to help old people most especially who are computer illiterates. I believe this will go a long way making an impact in their lives.

Where are you studying abroad and what courses are you taking?
I am currently doing a study abroad at Macalester College in Minnesota. I am taking voice and speech, algorithm design, statistical computing and aqua aerobics. Two of these courses are similar to courses in Ashesi and the other two, I took because I wanted to develop myself personally.

What has been your favorite aspect of studying abroad?
I would say moving out of my comfort zone. I hate cold but I chose to be in one of the coldest places and I was close to not coming because of that. I have never been this away from home but I have this time. I also decided to challenge myself by taking courses I don’t like and I am happy I made this decision even though sometimes I want to give up.

How has it shaped you?
I have gained confidence and it has taught me that I can do anything only if I am determined enough to do it. I am a shy person outside who is afraid to make mistakes in front of people but this experience has taught me that it is okay to make mistakes, correct them and ask if I don’t know something.

"For me, an investment in Ashesi is an investment in creating real change. It’s the difference between investing in one organization or investing in an incubator that will generate thousands of people who will go on to change the world."
